Ivan's mother learned about his health problems during a routine visit to the pediatrician. A careful examination by the doctor revealed heart murmurs, and the three-month-old boy was referred for examination to the regional hospital in Vinnytsia.
At six months old, the boy underwent his first heart surgery. Catheterization of his tiny heart was performed by doctors at the M.M. Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. It was here that Ivan was diagnosed with an aortic valve with a predominance of 3rd-degree stenosis. After the catheterization, the child was recommended observation and periodic check-ups at the Institute, as the defect could not be radically operated on at that time – it was necessary to wait for the body to strengthen and the child to grow older. Thus, specialists at the Amosov Institute monitored Ivan's condition for almost ten years. Initially, examinations were conducted every two years, then every six months, and when the boy turned 8, every three months.
In March 2023, it was decided that the boy could finally undergo surgery. In June, surgeons performed a complex heart operation that lasted over nine hours: the pulmonary valve of the organ was removed, and a biological one was sewn in its place. During the operation, severe bleeding began, and doctors had to extend the child's medically induced sleep for some time to stabilize his condition. The boy regained consciousness six hours after the surgery. He then spent another three days in intensive care before being discharged home.
Currently, doctors cannot say whether this was Ivan's last heart surgery. It is quite possible that when he gets older, the valve will need to be replaced. But this will only become clear over time. And now, the entire team of the "Tvoya opora" Foundation wishes this courageous teenager much strength, energy, good health, and the fulfillment of his dreams!
We sincerely hope that our ward will continue to feel well in the future. We thank our partners, thanks to whom we were able to help another child within the "Big Little Heart" project:
The Guzema Jewelry brand, within the #Charity_chain initiative, which provided medications for the boy's treatment during his stay in the hospital. Credit Agricole Ukraine, which provided the Custodiol solution for Ivan's heart surgery.
