This summer, Artem turned 9 years old. For all 9 years of his life, he has been troubled by one problem – a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

According to the rating of the most complex and dangerous heart defects, this one can confidently take first place. Babies born with such a defect require immediate surgical intervention in the first minutes of life. The syndrome encompasses a range of heart defects that children do not survive.

The likely problem was noticed by the gynecologist during an ultrasound at 6 weeks, and at 18 weeks the diagnosis was made – a congenital heart defect. However, the pregnancy proceeded normally, and the woman gave birth naturally a little earlier than the expected date.

The baby was taken to intensive care that same evening, where he spent 8 days. The next day, he was transferred from the Odesa Regional Hospital to the Amosov Institute, where he immediately underwent the Norwood 1 operation. Nine months later, he had the next operation, Norwood 2.

For 9 years, the boy has been examined at the Amosov Institute. During this time, he underwent several more surgeries and minor surgical interventions. In general, his condition was satisfactory, but a reduced oxygen level was observed, his skin turned blue, and the little boy experienced weakness. It was decided to perform another operation – the Fontan procedure.

After the operation, Artem spent 13 days in intensive care. Throughout this time, the boy was provided with the necessary medications and medical supplies thanks to the help of the benefactor Robert Shostak, who collected funds for his birthday and donated the Custodiol drug to the children, as well as the support of the Charity Chain project – a joint project of the Guzema Fine Jewelry brand and the "Tvoya opora" (Your Support) Foundation.

Doctors do not give final prognoses regarding further treatment, but we sincerely hope that Artem will only get better.
