Mom and Dad were eagerly awaiting Lev's arrival. But their eldest son, already 16 years old, dreamed even more of having a little brother. The family lives in Kyiv. Mom often had check-ups with doctors during her pregnancy and never suspected that one day something could go wrong. At 25 weeks, during a routine ultrasound, the doctors had doubts about the health of the unborn child and sent the woman for examination to the Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology.
According to all the examinations, the baby had a left-sided diaphragmatic hernia. A fairly rare pathology that does not occur so often and is quite difficult to diagnose.
It is characterized by the presence of a diaphragmatic defect, pulmonary hypoplasia, and pulmonary arterial hypertension. In most children, such a defect, also called a diaphragmatic hernia, is diagnosed only after birth, or even during the first month of life. Moreover, without immediate clinical intervention, the chances of survival are very slim.
Fortunately, suspicions about Lev's condition arose early enough. So, the doctors had the opportunity to plan how to help the baby when he decided to be born. Mom is sent to the IPAG (Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology), where it would be best for her to give birth and where the child could immediately receive the necessary help. The woman spent the rest of her pregnancy at home.
She had a cesarean section in June of this year. A boy was born weighing 3700 g and 50 cm tall. He was immediately taken to intensive care, and three days later he underwent surgery to reposition his internal organs. The boy remains in intensive care for a long time, as he now needs to develop his lungs and have his health carefully monitored.
The child is provided with everything necessary in intensive care thanks to the Charity Chain project – a joint project of the "Tvoya opora" Foundation and the Guzema Fine Jewelry brand. So far, doctors are not giving any information about further operations, but we believe that everything will be fine with Lev very soon.
