The Miracle of the Fight: A Story of a Heart That Never Gives Up

It was the 13th week of pregnancy. A young expectant mother joyfully awaited her next ultrasound, eager to see her little one again. The pregnancy had been smooth so far, and she was hopeful for more good news. But instead, doctors urgently informed her of a threatened miscarriage. She was hospitalized in Zhytomyr, where she was diagnosed with fetoplacental insufficiency — a serious complication that endangered the baby’s health.

Though treatment stabilized her condition, doctors warned that the baby might be born with a congenital heart defect. That news shattered the young parents’ dreams. But rather than give up, they found the strength to believe — and to fight for their unborn child.

And he — little Tymur — was born on August 25, 2015, a true miracle after a long and uncertain road. Sadly, right after birth, mother and baby didn’t go home to the lovingly prepared nursery. Instead, they were rushed to the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery.

There, Tymur’s heart defect was confirmed, and he was immediately admitted to the ICU. Doctors stabilized his condition and told the family that they would need to return every month for check-ups, fighting for every day of their son’s life.

By the time Tymur turned one, he underwent his first heart surgery. Surgeons performed pulmonary artery banding to reduce strain on his heart. At age three, he underwent a Glenn procedure, helping his body better oxygenate the blood. Each surgery was a monumental challenge, but little Tymur proved to be a strong, courageous fighter. He endured recovery and rehabilitation — slowly reclaiming his right to a full life.

In 2024, Tymur faced his third major operation — a Fontan procedure, which lasted seven hours. It was an intricate correction involving total cavopulmonary connection, offering him the chance at a life with far fewer limitations. Doctors cautioned that he may one day need a heart transplant, but the surgery gave him new hope.

Through all these years, Tymur hasn’t just fought for his life — he’s fought for the right to dream. Raised among doctors and caregivers, he witnessed their dedication and compassion. Deep in his heart, he now knows: life is precious and worth protecting.

Despite the hardships, Tymur is growing into a curious and determined young boy. He may not yet know what he wants to become, but one thing is certain — he wants to save lives.

This story is about strength, resilience, and hope — and how the human spirit can defy even the most difficult circumstances.

Tymur’s family expresses deep gratitude to Lancôme, whose support helped them through a critical time. Thanks to their assistance, all the necessary medications and surgical materials were provided, giving Tymur the chance he so desperately needed.

This was made possible through Lancôme’s “Big Little Heart” project in honor of St. Nicholas Day 2023.
